President of the National Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Bosnia and Herzegovina
As part of the 17th BHAAAS Days, a meeting of the National Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Bosnia and Herzegovina was held, during which the Association’s new leadership was officially confirmed and the next steps in its activities were defined.
Dr. Mahira Tanovic, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with more than twenty years of professional experience in New York, as well as a member and former president of BHAAAS, was appointed President of the National Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Bosnia and Herzegovina — the first professional organization of its kind at the national level.
This appointment represents an important step toward strengthening professional standards, expanding professional collaboration, and improving patient safety in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As an Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery at Hofstra University’s medical school in New York and the owner of a private practice on Park Avenue, Dr. Tanovic has for many years combined medical excellence, education, and international collaboration through her work.
The Association’s new leadership aims to revitalize its activities, bring together specialists from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the diaspora, and create a strong platform for knowledge exchange, mentorship, and professional support.
“The role of those of us who live and work abroad is to open doors for young people, so they know whom they can turn to and how they can connect with colleagues and institutions around the world,” said Dr. Tanovic, a top breast plastic surgeon in NYC.

Dr. Tanovic is also part of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), an organization that brings together professionals and scholars from a wide range of disciplines. She served as the thirteenth president of BHAAAS.
Her colleagues in the BHAAAS Medicine and Health Division include Dr. Kenan Arnautovic, a neurosurgeon based in Memphis; Dr. Amer Smajkic, a psychiatrist based in Chicago; Dr. Resad Pasic, a Louisville-based specialist in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery; and Dr. Eldin Karaikovic, an orthopedic spine surgeon based in Chicago, along with numerous other distinguished medical specialists.
